A man was arrested in Downtown Los Angeles on Tuesday after he was caught on video using a chainsaw to cut down several trees. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) released a community alert shortly before 5 p.m., showcasing a photo of the suspect, described as being in his 40s and riding a bicycle. Just 90 minutes later, police announced his arrest on suspicion of felony vandalism.
The tree-cutting incident sparked outrage among local residents after numerous trees were found severed over the weekend. Many of these trees were Indian laurel figs, with some cut at the base and others still hanging by a thin strip of bark. The vandalism was reported in various locations, including South Grand Avenue and W 8 Street.
The suspect is believed to have started his spree on Friday afternoon, cutting down trees at 3:40 p.m. near 1550 W 8 Street. He continued his actions early Saturday morning at 1:22 a.m. near 350 S Grand Avenue. The LAPD is still investigating additional locations where trees were found downed.
Mayor Karen Bass expressed her disbelief at the situation, calling it “truly beyond comprehension.” She stated that public works crews are already working to replace the trees as soon as possible. Trees are vital to urban areas, providing shade, cleaning the air, and helping to manage stormwater runoff. They also play a role in reducing heat, with shaded areas often being significantly cooler than those exposed to direct sunlight.
The LAPD is urging anyone with information about the incident to contact Central Burglary Detective Gutierrez at (213) 924-8930 or the Central Area Watch Commander at (213) 486-6618. The community’s response highlights the importance of trees in the city and the collective effort to protect urban greenery.
