Rubio: U.S. May Withdraw from Ukraine Peace Initiative if Progress Stalls Soon

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that President Donald Trump may abandon efforts to negotiate a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine if there are no signs of progress in the coming days. Speaking in Paris after meetings with European and Ukrainian leaders, Rubio emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that a decision would need to be made quickly about whether a deal is feasible.

Rubio expressed frustration over Russia’s reluctance to engage in meaningful negotiations to end the ongoing conflict. He indicated that if the talks are unproductive, Trump might choose to move on from the peace initiative. His comments come amid some indications of progress in discussions with Ukraine, highlighting a growing impatience within the U.S. administration regarding the stalled negotiations.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov acknowledged that some progress has been made towards a peace settlement, but he noted that interactions with Washington remain challenging. He reiterated Russia’s desire to protect its interests while remaining open to dialogue with the U.S.

Trump recently mentioned plans to sign a minerals deal with Ukraine, which follows a previous attempt that fell through after a tense meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. Meanwhile, U.S. officials, including Rubio, are under pressure to find a resolution to the conflict, which has resulted in significant loss of life and ongoing violence.

The talks in Paris marked the first substantial in-person discussions involving Trump’s peace proposal and European leaders. Rubio reported that the U.S. framework for peace received a positive response, and Zelenskiy’s team described the discussions as constructive.

As the situation develops, the role of European nations is seen as crucial, especially since lifting sanctions on Russia may be necessary for any potential agreement. Rubio emphasized that without clear indicators of progress soon, the U.S. may reconsider its involvement in the peace process.

If the U.S. decides to withdraw from the negotiations, it could significantly hinder any chances for a resolution, as no other country possesses the leverage to pressure both Russia and Ukraine effectively. The future of U.S. policy towards the conflict remains uncertain, with potential outcomes ranging from maintaining current sanctions and support to halting aid altogether.

Both sides have shown willingness to engage in talks, but substantive progress remains elusive. The demands from Russia, including Ukraine’s abandonment of NATO ambitions and territorial concessions, are seen as unacceptable by Kyiv. The ongoing war continues to claim lives, underscoring the urgent need for a viable peace agreement.
