After a recent meeting, former President Donald Trump expressed strong criticism of Russian President Vladimir Putin. He condemned the attacks on civilian areas in Ukraine, stating, “There was no reason for Putin to be shooting missiles into civilian areas, cities and towns, over the last few days.” Trump called on Putin to halt these bombings and suggested that the U.S. might need to consider secondary sanctions against Russia.
In response to Trump’s comments, Senator Lindsey Graham, a Republican, mentioned that the Senate is ready to advance bipartisan legislation. This bill aims to impose trade sanctions on countries that purchase Russian oil, gas, and other products, signaling a united front among lawmakers on this issue.
On the international front, French President Emmanuel Macron shared that Ukraine is prepared for an unconditional ceasefire following a positive discussion with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Macron highlighted the ongoing efforts of the “Coalition of the Willing,” which includes France and the United Kingdom, in pursuing a lasting peace in Ukraine.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni echoed this sentiment, expressing hope that Russia would demonstrate a genuine willingness to seek peace after her meeting with Zelenskyy in Rome. This meeting took place shortly after Pope Francis’s funeral, where discussions about the war in Ukraine were also prominent.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also engaged with Zelenskyy during the funeral, discussing what he described as “positive progress” towards ending the conflict.
Additionally, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen extended the European Union’s support to Ukraine, assuring Zelenskyy that the bloc stands firmly behind Ukraine in its pursuit of peace.
These developments reflect a growing international consensus on the need for a resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, with leaders emphasizing the importance of peace and stability in the region.
