US President Donald Trump has criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for his recent comments about Crimea. Zelenskyy firmly rejected the idea of Ukraine giving up any territory, including Crimea, in peace talks with Russia. He stated, “There is nothing to talk about – it is our land, the land of the Ukrainian people.” This statement came just before discussions in London involving US, European, and Ukrainian officials.
Trump expressed his disapproval on his Truth Social platform, claiming Zelenskyy’s remarks could harm peace negotiations. He argued that such statements make it harder to resolve the ongoing conflict. Trump reminded everyone that Russia annexed Crimea in 2014 “without a shot being fired” and suggested that Zelenskyy’s stance could prolong the war.
In the meantime, US Vice President JD Vance indicated that the US has made a clear proposal to both Ukraine and Russia. He emphasized that land swaps would be essential for any agreement, meaning both sides would need to give up some territory.
In London, officials from the US, Ukraine, and Europe engaged in what they described as “substantive” talks aimed at achieving a truce. However, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s last-minute cancellation of his trip raised tensions and led to a change in the meeting format. Zelenskyy noted that emotions ran high during the discussions but expressed hope for future collaboration to bring about peace.
Meanwhile, Trump’s former envoy Keith Kellogg reported positive talks with Zelenskyy’s chief of staff, urging a shift towards achieving peace and prioritizing American interests. A spokesperson for British Prime Minister Keir Starmer downplayed any disappointment over Rubio’s absence, stating that meaningful discussions were still taking place.
Central to the talks was the US proposal, which reportedly included recognizing Russia’s annexation of Crimea, lifting sanctions on Russia, and ruling out Ukraine’s NATO membership. This position has been met with strong resistance from Ukraine and European nations, who find it unacceptable to ask Ukraine to concede its territory after an invasion.
Analysts pointed out that the US stance on sanctions relief is particularly concerning, as it could allow Russia to strengthen its military while leaving Ukraine in a vulnerable position. European leaders are wary of any agreements that might compromise Ukraine’s sovereignty or security.
